Recommended Books and Resources for Entrepreneurs

Hi Friends and Entrepreneurial Contacts:

… I’m in the process of compiling a list of recommended books and resources for entrepreneurs and could really use your help!

* If you’ve got one (or perhaps a few) that you’d recommend, I’d be pleased to consider including it in the list that will be soon shared. (Title, Author / Website name, URL / etc)

Also, if you’d care to – it would be great to have a brief comment on what you found particularly helpful from that source.

PLEASE add your information as a comment to this post!

Much thanks
Jim Ewing

To start, and in no particular order, I’ve personally found the following to be helpful:

BOOKS:

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't
by James C. Collins (I found the stories to be inspiring, but also found the insights on how these results were achieved to be very helpful for entrepreneurs.)

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
by Malcolm Gladwell (Many entrepreneurs are looking for 'the next big thing'. Gladwell helps you look for the signals that can point you in the right direction.)

RESOURCES:

Futurpreneur Canada
(For young entrepreneurs in Canada, this has been one very helpful resources ... Read about the interview I had with Norm Grey regarding their Mentorship Program http://ow.ly/Qm8Q3 )

ATB Financial (in particular, their business resources and templates section)
http://www.atb.com/business/resources/Pages/default.aspx (For those located in Alberta, Canada - I know that ATB Financial has been providing great support for many of the business clients and contacts that I've been working with over the years.)

  1. An update provided by my friend Allan Walkey ...
    Allan Walkey who says:

Definitely one of the best books I have read is Donald Rumball's The Entrepreneurial Edge..
    The ISBN is 1-55013-145-1.

  2. Some suggestions from my friend Scott Sheris who says:

If i had the time to list them all, LOL. But here are a few just to help get started.

    Books:
Powermind System / Michael Keifer…scientist turned personal development author. The author takes a "scientific approach" to development. This covers a wide variety of study topics, but what I find specifically helpful is the details and explanations about why some of the things we have always heard about work the way they do.

Aladdin Factor / Mark Victor Hansen & Jack Canfield…This is basically the power of asking. But it covers it in a fun way that helps you understand your power, not just your need. I found the exercises to be particularly helpful.

Leadership: The Warrior's Art / Christopher Kolenda…Military (US ARMY) This is a collection of articles and stories written by others in the military about the lessons learned in leadership throughout the ages. Though the tack is decidedly military, this is a must for anyone looking to build any organization. The examples share insights into how to view different aspects of leadership. For me this made me think differently about many aspects of how I was approaching leadership in general. I was able to take my game up a notch after reading this book.

    Resources:
TED Talks…(www.ted.com) … In my opinion, this is where the nobel prize winners are going to get their next idea. Talks range from education to medicine…cutting edge technology to inspirational stories from around the world. Almost no topic is off limits. This is where you go to expand your horizon on whats possible in your own life.

  3. Hi Jim,

While not limited to Entrepreneurs, I've always liked Tom Peters' "The Little Big Things". Good reminders to all who own or manage a business.

  4. Thank you Futurpreneur Canada for the comment on the book by Tom Peters. (Sorry ... I posted your comment twice and then removed the duplicate.)
